What is a duct coil line?
A duct coil line is an automatic machine that feeds flat sheet metal straight from a coil through a series of stations — decoiling, straightening, beading and notching — before forming and cutting a finished rectangular or square duct. Where a manual workshop needs separate rollforming, notching and folding machines fed with pre-cut sheet, a coil line does all of it in one continuous, PLC-controlled pass from raw coil to finished duct.
Coil lines are built around a motorised decoiler (often twin-stand for continuous running), a straightening & beading station that flattens the material and rolls in stiffening beads, a notching unit that punches corner and seam notches for TDC, TDF, cleat or Pittsburgh connections, and a forming & shearing section that folds and cuts the duct to length. Hydraulic or AC servo drives give precise, repeatable sizing, and touch-screen or CAD-linked controllers let an operator store dozens of duct programs and switch between them in seconds.
How an automatic coil line forms a duct
A PLC-based control system and AC servo drives take material straight from coil to a finished, notched and folded duct, with the operator retrieving completed ducts and switching between stored programs.
Many coil lines run with a semi-automatic coil selector supporting two or four uncoilers, letting an operator switch between different material thicknesses and widths without stopping the line to reload. Motorised decoilers with capacities up to several tonnes keep continuous production running, with free-standing "A" frame decoilers available for coil loading and unloading.
A notching unit fitted with V and corner notch punches handles TDC, TDF, C-cleat, S-cleat, knock-in flanger, Pittsburgh and snap-lock connections, so the duct leaves the line ready to seam without any secondary punching.
Duct configurations & coil line capacity
Coil lines typically produce fully wrapped ducts, as well as "L" shape, "U" shape and flat sheet ducts, with or without beading applied — covering the full range of profiles a duct shop needs from one machine.
Coil widths up to around 1500mm, material thickness up to 1.6mm (1mm for stainless steel), and finished duct sizes from as small as 120mm x 120mm up to the coil's full width are typical of a mid-size line — larger lines run coil up to 2000mm wide.
Optional slitting units with one, two or three sets of knives allow longitudinal cutting of the coil for reinforcement stays, while stored duct programs (often 99 or more) let a single line switch between dozens of standard duct dimensions at the touch of a button.
